Rigorous High School Course Load
Colleges don’t just look at GPA — they care how you earned it. Taking harder classes shows that you challenged yourself and can handle college-level work. A rigorous course load, paired with a solid GPA, strengthens both your Academic Index (AI) and overall admissions profile.
Freshman Year (9th) – Foundation & Fit
Sophomore Year (10th) – Build Rigor, Build Exposure
Junior Year (11th) – Peak Rigor & Recruiting Push
Senior Year (12th) – Close Strong
Freshman Year (9th) – Foundation & Fit
Academics:
- English: Honors English 9
- Math: Geometry or Algebra II Honors
- Science: Honors Biology
- History: Honors World History or AP Human Geography (if offered to freshmen)
- Language: Level I or II Honors
- Elective: Intro to computer science, journalism, or art
- PE/Arts as required
- AP count: 0–1 max
Athletics:
- Play for your high school varsity or top JV team (goal: varsity by sophomore year).
- Continue competitive club/travel team(sport dependent).
- Track stats and achievements from the start.
- Attend 1–2 school-specific camps.
- Create a basic highlight reel.
Sophomore Year (10th) – Build Rigor, Build Exposure
Academics:
- English: Honors English 10
- Math: Algebra II or Precalculus Honors
- Science: Honors Chemistry (AP Chemistry if ready)
- History: AP World or AP European History
- Language: Level II or III Honors
- Elective: STEM or humanities elective
- AP count: 2–3 cumulative
Academics:
- Full varsity participation.
- Continue travel/club play — aim for regional tournaments.
- Start informal contact with college coaches (intro emails, updates).
- Attend Prospect Camp if available.
- Begin building academic + athletic résumé.
Junior Year (11th) – Peak Rigor & Recruiting Push
Academics:
- English: AP English Language
- Math: Precalculus Honors or AP Calculus AB/BC
- Science: AP Bio, AP Chem, or AP Physics
- History: AP US History
- Language: Level IV Honors or AP Language
- Elective: Another AP or high-level elective
- AP count: 5–7 cumulative
Athletics:
- Be in prime form for varsity season — key stats & awards matter now.
- Send updated highlight reel to coaches by fall.
- Take SAT/ACT early (aim for Academic Index well above Ivy/NESCAC minimum).
- Schedule unofficial visits to target schools.
- Fall & spring: Email coaches before tournaments with schedule & jersey number.
- By summer after junior year: Push for verbal commitment after given green light by admissions.
Senior Year (12th) – Close Strong
Academics:
- English: AP English Literature
- Math: AP Calculus BC or AP Statistics
- Science: AP Physics, AP Chem, or AP Environmental Science
- History: AP Government, AP Economics, or AP Comparative Government
- Language: AP Language (if not taken earlier)
- Elective: Capstone, dual enrollment, or research project
- AP count: 7–10 cumulative
Athletics:
- Keep performance consistent — coaches don’t want senior slumps.
- Maintain contact with coaches and admissions liaison.
- For Early Decision (common for recruited athletes), have application ready by November 1.
- If still uncommitted, leverage fall showcases for last-minute recruiting.
- Train during off-season to be college-ready.
